The rule
Monetization on YouTube starts at 500 subscribers for fan funding and 1,000 for ads, each with watch-time or Shorts-view minimums. TikTok needs 10,000 followers and 100,000 views in 30 days. Instagram gifts need 500 followers, X 500 verified followers, Snapchat 50,000. Facebook is invite-only.
Checked Primary sources
Pinterest lists no program in which it pays creators, and LinkedIn has none open to creators generally: its paid features are invite-only or limited US rollouts. The rest of this page lines up every program's rules in one table, each row linked to the platform's own help page and read on 28 September 2026.
"Program" here means money the platform itself pays you: a share of ad revenue, a performance payment, or the platform's cut of what fans send. Brand deals and affiliate commissions are paid by someone else and are covered in affiliate link rules by platform.
What does each platform require before it pays you?

Currencies are as each platform states them. "None published" means the platform's own pages give no number, not that there is no bar.
Which changes have dates attached?
Four platforms have dated changes that affect the table. Each is stated here as the platform dates it.
- X. Creator Revenue Sharing stopped taking enrolments on 7 August 2026 and closed on 7 September 2026. Original Content Rewards replaced it; existing members could apply from 8 September (X Help: Creator Revenue Sharing).
- Snapchat. Since 7 May 2026, a creator needs at least 100 hours of Spotlight view time over 28 days to qualify for maximum Creator Rewards (Snapchat Support).
- Facebook. In-stream Ads, Ads on Reels and the Performance Bonus program ended on 31 August 2025; eligible creators are invited to Content Monetization instead (Meta Business Help). In-stream ads for Live ended on 15 June 2026 (Meta Business Help).
- YouTube. On 10 August 2026 YouTube announced that from 1 February 2027 new applicants to the ads tier will need 8,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days, still with 1,000 subscribers. Channels already in the program are not affected, and the fan-funding thresholds do not change (YouTube Official Blog, YouTube Help: changes). From the same date, Shorts Creator Pool earnings need 10 million qualified Shorts views over 90 days (YouTube Help: changes).
How long is each platform's measurement window?
The thresholds are not comparable at a glance, because each platform measures over a different window, and some count only certain views.
| Platform | What is counted | Window |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube | Qualified watch hours: public long-form videos only; Shorts feed views, private, unlisted and deleted videos excluded | Last 12 months |
| YouTube | Qualified Shorts views (Shorts feed only); public uploads for the fan-funding tier | Last 90 days |
| TikTok | Video views | Last 30 days |
| X Original Content Rewards | Home Timeline impressions from verified users, replies excluded | Last 90 days |
| X Subscriptions | Organic impressions | Last 3 months |
| Snapchat | View time, with a Spotlight share | Last 28 days |
| Instagram, Facebook | No view threshold published | — |
A 30-day window punishes one quiet month. A 12-month window forgives it but takes longer to fill. Plan uploads around the window of the program you are closest to.
Program notes, platform by platform
YouTube
The fan-funding tier exists only in the 99 countries and regions on YouTube's expanded-program list; elsewhere the single 1,000-subscriber tier applies (YouTube Help). Both tiers need 2-Step Verification and an AdSense for YouTube account. An active Community Guidelines strike blocks an application until it expires or is removed on appeal, though members who receive a strike are not removed for it (YouTube Help); how strikes run is in strikes and appeals by platform. Under-18s can be paid only through a parent's or guardian's approved AdSense for YouTube account (YouTube Help). The AdSense payment threshold in US dollars is $100 (AdSense Help).
TikTok
Only Personal accounts qualify. After switching from a Business account you can apply 30 days later, and the account must be public (TikTok Creator Academy). A video earns only if it is original, over 1 minute, reaches at least 1,000 For You views, and is not a Duet, a Stitch, a Photo Mode post or sponsored content (TikTok Creator Academy). Five video violations in 30 days make an account ineligible (TikTok Creator Academy). The full video rules and the appeal windows are in TikTok Creator Rewards Program requirements. TikTok also runs Subscription, LIVE Gifts, Video Gifts and TikTok Shop; its overview page does not list their thresholds (TikTok Creator Academy).
Content Monetization has no public threshold because there is no application. Invitations arrive through the Facebook app, email, Meta Business Suite or the Professional dashboard. The in-app interest form "is not an application" (Meta Business Help). The Partner Monetization Policies require public content on a Page or professional-mode profile, original content, and residence in an eligible country, with connected financial accounts there too (Meta Business Help). In the EU, the EEA and Switzerland, earning from ads is limited if your Accounts Center holds a subscription to use Meta without ads or with less-personalised ads (Meta Business Help). Without a payout account you can earn up to $500 per tool and $1,500 across three, and unclaimed earnings are forfeited after six months (Meta Business Help).
Subscriptions and gifts share one country list of 49 countries and the same age and account rules. They differ on followers: 10,000 against 500 (subscriptions, gifts). Gifts pay USD 0.01 per Star. Instagram takes its share when the viewer buys Stars, and the app store's in-app purchase fee, which Instagram puts at typically 30%, comes out of the pack price too. Payout rules match Facebook's, including the USD 500 per-tool cap without a payout account (Instagram Help).
X
Original Content Rewards pays on qualified impressions: unique impressions from Premium subscribers in the Home Timeline, with at least 50% of the post visible. Meeting the criteria makes you eligible to apply, not admitted. A rejected application gets one appeal, and after that you can reapply in 42 days (X Help). The Creator Monetization Standards add account-level rules for every X program: an account active for 3 months, a complete profile, a verified email and two-factor authentication (X Help).
Snapchat
The program is invitation-only and needs Snap Star status first. Snap Star is a separate verification with no numeric bar; Snap weighs audience, public Stories, authenticity and notability (Snapchat Support). The country gate is Snap's payout list (Snapchat Support).
Pinterest and LinkedIn
Pinterest's creator pages answer "Will Pinterest pay me directly?" with no: it "does not facilitate payment" for product tagging, affiliate links or brand partnerships (Pinterest Creators). The same pages name brand partnerships and affiliate links as the ways to earn there.
LinkedIn has three creator-facing products, none an open pay program:
- BrandLink is sold to advertisers through LinkedIn's sales team (LinkedIn Marketing Solutions).
- Creator Marketplace helps invited creators get discovered by brands and advertisers. It needs 12 posts in 90 days, 5,000 followers, 45,000 impressions in 90 days and an invitation, and is open to select members in the US and Canada (LinkedIn Help).
- Advice sessions let Premium Business subscribers sell paid one-to-one calls through Stripe, rolling out to a limited number of US members (LinkedIn Help).
Worked example: one creator's numbers against every program
The creator below is hypothetical. The numbers are chosen to show how the thresholds interact; recompute the gaps with your own. Assume the creator lives in Germany, which is on every list used here.
| Program | Threshold | Hypothetical numbers | Result | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube fan-funding tier | 500 subs, 3 uploads (90 days), 3,000 hours (12 months) | 1,400 subs, 3 uploads, 3,600 hours | Eligible | — |
| YouTube ads tier | 1,000 subs and 4,000 hours, or 10M Shorts views (90 days) | 1,400 subs, 3,600 hours, 1.2M Shorts views | Not yet | 400 hours |
| TikTok Creator Rewards | 10,000 followers, 100,000 views (30 days) | 18,000 followers, 85,000 views | Not yet | 15,000 views in 30 days |
| Instagram gifts | 500 followers | 6,200 | Eligible | — |
| Instagram subscriptions | 10,000 followers | 6,200 | Not yet | 3,800 followers |
| X Original Content Rewards | 500 verified followers, 500,000 verified impressions (90 days), Premium | 300 verified followers, no Premium | Not yet | 200 verified followers and a subscription, plus the impressions bar |
| Snapchat | 50,000 followers, Snap Star, invitation | 9,000 followers | Not yet | 41,000 followers |
Two readings follow. The creator can switch on YouTube fan funding and Instagram gifts today. The closest ad-revenue program is YouTube's ads tier, at 90% of its watch-hour bar; TikTok is at 85% of its view bar. If the YouTube application lands on or after 1 February 2027, the announced 8,000-hour bar applies instead and the gap becomes 4,400 hours. For this creator, the application date matters as much as the upload plan.
Which programs can your numbers reach now? A checklist
Take each number from the platform's own analytics, for the window shown. Every item comes from the table's sources.
- YouTube fan funding: 500+ subscribers, 3+ public uploads in 90 days, and 3,000+ qualified watch hours in 12 months or 3M+ qualified Shorts views in 90 days. Your channel is in one of the 99 listed countries or regions.
- YouTube ads tier: 1,000+ subscribers and 4,000+ qualified watch hours in 12 months or 10M+ qualified Shorts views in 90 days. No active Community Guidelines strike.
- TikTok Creator Rewards: 10,000+ followers, 100,000+ views in 30 days, a public Personal account for at least 30 days since any switch, age 18+, and an account registered in one of the eight countries.
- Instagram gifts: professional account, 500+ followers, 18+, one of the 49 countries, payout account set up.
- Instagram subscriptions: as for gifts, with 10,000+ followers.
- X Original Content Rewards: Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business; 500+ verified followers; 500,000+ Home Timeline impressions from verified users in 90 days; account 3+ months old with two-factor authentication.
- X Subscriptions: 2,000+ followers with Premium subscriptions, 5M+ organic impressions in 3 months, a post in the last 30 days.
- Snapchat: Snap Star status, 50,000+ followers, 15,000+ hours of view time in 28 days with 3,000+ from Spotlight. Then wait for the email invitation.
- Facebook: a Page or professional-mode profile that meets the Partner Monetization Policies, residence in an eligible country, then the interest form. There is no number to reach.
Payout setup asks for more than numbers. TikTok asks for a payment method, tax information and identity verification before paying (TikTok Creator Academy), and AdSense may require tax information depending on where you live (AdSense Help). What each platform then reports to tax authorities is covered in tax forms platforms send creators.
Frequently asked questions
Which social media platforms pay creators directly?
YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, X and Snapchat each run at least one program in which the platform pays the creator. Pinterest does not pay creators for product tags, affiliate links or brand partnerships. LinkedIn has no pay program open to creators generally: its Creator Marketplace helps invited creators get discovered by brands and advertisers, and Advice sessions, paid one-to-one calls for Premium Business subscribers, is rolling out to a limited number of US members.
Which program has the lowest entry threshold?
By followers, Instagram gifts: 500 followers on a professional account in one of 49 countries. YouTube's fan-funding tier also starts at 500 subscribers but adds three uploads in 90 days and 3,000 watch hours or 3 million Shorts views.
Can creators under 18 get paid by platforms?
On YouTube, only through a parent's or guardian's approved AdSense for YouTube account. TikTok Creator Rewards, Instagram subscriptions and gifts, and X require 18. Snapchat requires 18 or the age of majority where you live.
Do I need a business account to be paid?
It depends on the platform, and TikTok runs the other way. TikTok's Creator Rewards accepts only Personal accounts. Instagram needs a professional account. Facebook needs a Page or a profile in professional mode. X accepts Personal or Business accounts but requires a Premium subscription.
Is X Creator Revenue Sharing still open?
No. It stopped taking enrolments on 7 August 2026 and closed on 7 September 2026. Its replacement, Original Content Rewards, needs 500 verified followers and 500,000 verified Home Timeline impressions in 90 days, down from 5 million organic impressions in 3 months under the old program.
